Typhoon Phanfone to Hit Tokyo on Monday

Fukushima, Japan

A downgraded Typhoon Phanfone is headed toward Tokyo after battering southern Japan and leaving thousands without power and forcing airlines to cancel dozens of flights.

The storm, which hit the status of Super Typhoon before weakening Sunday, is expected to hit the Japanese capital on Monday with a forecast of at least 30 centimeters of rain.

The approaching typhoon has already forced the suspension of a search for 12 people missing after the eruption of Mount Ontake.

The U.S. military said the storm washed three of its servicemen out to sea as it passed over Okinawa Saturday. Rescuers have recovered the body of one and the other two are still missing.
