Officials in Pakistan say a U.S. drone strike has killed three people in the country's tribal region, near the Afghan border.

Security officials say the incident happened Monday in the Boya area of North Waziristan, a known stronghold of Taliban and al-Qaida linked militants.

U.S. drone strikes are deeply unpopular in Pakistan. Pakistan has repeatedly criticized drone attacks as illegal and a violation of its sovereignty, but U.S. officials say the strikes are an important tool in defeating the insurgents.

The U.S. has decreased the frequency of drone strikes in recent months.
