The Egyptian football league will resume on April 15 after a break of nearly three months because of the revolution that toppled ex-president Hosni Mubarak.

The league started last August, but was suspended in late January because of anti-government protests in Cairo and other cities. The season will now end on July 10.

The news has been welcomed by the Egyptian League clubs, whose sources of revenue have dried up during the stoppage. It was uncertain for a time whether the league would be able to continue.

Despite the domestic league shutdown, football reappeared in Egypt on February 27 when Zamalek of Cairo beat Kenya's Ulinzi Stars in an African Champions League qualifier.

Zamalek is the Egyptian league's top team with 32 points, three ahead of Ismaily after 15 matches.

Later this month, Egypt's national team travels to South Africa for a critical Group G game in 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.
