Astronomers noted that the star Betelgeuse was getting dimmer. This set off speculation that the star was getting cooler and about to explode in a spectacular supernova. A pair of astronomers analyzed recent observations of Betelgeuse and found evidence that the star was simply shedding material from its outer layers.
