Chile's High Court Upholds Indictment Against Pinochet

Chile's Supreme Court has upheld an indictment against former dictator Augusto Pinochet on murder and kidnapping charges.

The high court announced the three-to-two vote Tuesday, in a move that could bring the ex-dictator one step closer to trial.

General Pinochet was indicted last month on one count of murder and nine counts of kidnapping. The charges stem from "Operation Condor," a plan implemented in the 1970s by Latin American military leaders to repress political opposition.

More than 3,000 people were killed in Chile for political reasons during General Pinochet's 17-year rule, that ended in 1990.

The former leader suffered a stroke in late December and has been recovering at his home in Santiago.
