Ushiyama, Grodum, Friesinger Tops in Moscow Speed Skating


Japanese speed skater Takahiro Ushiyama has beaten three Americans to take the men's 500-meters race at the World Allround Speedskating championships in Moscow.

Ushiyama finished in 36.28, 0.05 seconds ahead of American Shani Davis. Another American, Chad Hedrick, took the bronze medal, 0.37 behind Ushiyama.

Norway's Oystein Grodum won the men's 5,000 meters race in 6:22.31, with Chad Hedrick second, 1.3 seconds back.

In women's events, Anni Friesinger of Germany took both the 500m and the 3000m races. Friesinger won the 500m in 39.04, 0.06 seconds ahead of Cindy Klasen of Canada.

The German skater took the 3000m in 40.94 seconds, 0.66 ahead of countrywoman and 2002 Olympic champion Claudia Pechstein.
