U.S. police say a student opened fire at a high school in Colorado Friday, injuring two other students and then apparently taking his own life.

Police say one of the victims is in serious condition at a local hospital.

Video images Friday show students leaving Arapahoe High School with their hands above their heads. Police say that officers wanted to make sure no other students were armed.

The shooting took place just a short distance away from Columbine High School, where two students killed 13 students and staff before killing themselves in 1999.

Friday's incident occurred one day before the first anniversary of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. In that attack, a gunman killed 20 children and six adults before taking his life.

Last year's shooting in Newtown led the White House to push for major reforms in gun control laws, but the measures failed to gain congressional approval.
