Police in India's Assam state say they have shot and killed eight people in clashes with members of the Rabha tribe, who were protesting local elections there.

Rabha tribesmen and women say they were protesting because the election for village councils infringes on tribal law.

Police said Tuesday that some of the protesters have been torching houses and committing other violence in the western Goalpara district.
