Americans Evenly Divided on Syrian Diplomacy

An opinion poll in the United States about the whether diplomatic efforts to dismantle Syria's chemical-weapons arsenal will succeed shows Americans evenly divided.

A Gallup poll released Friday indicates that 45% of Americans are at least somewhat optimistic about the plan; 44% say they doubt it will succeed.

The survey asked for respondents' views about "Russia's Syrian chemical-weapons plan." It was conducted during the two days following President Barack Obama's speech to the nation this week, in which he said U.S. military action against Syria is still possible, but also noted efforts to reach a diplomatic solution.

The survey showed a widening majority of Americans oppose any U.S. military action against Syria - 62% this week, compared to 53% eight days earlier.
