Egyptian officials say a car bomb has exploded at a military intelligence headquarters in the restive Sinai peninsula, killing at least three soldiers and wounding 10 other people.

The blast Wednesday happened in the town of Rafah along the border with the Gaza Strip.

A short time later, militants also fired rocket-propelled grenades at a nearby army checkpoint.

The Sinai region has seen a surge in militant activity since former president Hosni Mubarak was deposed in 2011, and further unrest since the military ousted president Mohamed Morsi in July.
