British royal officials say Prince William will marry Kate Middleton on April 29 of next year at London's Westminster Abbey.

The announcement Tuesday comes a week after the 28-year-olds announced their engagement.

The abbey was the site for the funeral of Prince William's mother, Princess Diana. His grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, was also married at the church.

The prince's private secretary, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, said being mindful of Britain's tight economic situation, the wedding will be paid for by Prince Charles and Middleton's parents.

Prince William proposed to Middleton with his mother's sapphire and diamond engagement ring while on vacation in Kenya last month.

The couple met more than nine years ago while attending the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

British Prime Minister David Cameron told lawmakers last week he supports a public holiday so Britons could watch the wedding.

William is second in line to the throne of England after his father, Prince Charles.
