Israeli police shut down a Palestinian media outlet in Ramallah on Friday, accusing it of using television and the Internet to incite violence.

The Shin Bet security agency said the station, Palestine Today, "served the Islamic Jihad as a central means to incite the West Bank population, calling for terror attacks against Israel and its citizens."

Police and security forces raided the station before dawn and arrested its manager, Farook Aliat. Shin Bet described him as "an Islamic Jihad operative who had been imprisoned in Israel for his activities."

Islamic Jihad condemned the Israeli raid as "another episode in the long saga of oppression by the occupation."

A six-month surge of Palestinian violence against Israelis has killed 28 Israelis, two Americans and an Eritrean.

More than 180 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli police, soldiers and bystanders while trying to stab Israelis or run them over with cars.

Rumors that Israel was planning to take over an East Jerusalem holy site revered by Jews and Muslims set off the violence.

Israel fiercely denies the rumors and accuses Palestinian leaders of inciting young people to riot.

Palestinians deny this and say they are fed up with what they call Israeli oppression, little economic opportunity and a dim outlook for peace.
