2 Dead in Sweden IKEA Store Knife Attack

Swedish police say two people were killed and one seriously injured in a knife attack Monday at an IKEA store in Sweden.

One man is in custody in connection with the slayings in the city of Vasteras, about 100 km west of the capital Stockholm.

"We found a man and a woman who had knife injuries and who later died of their wounds," Vastmanland police said in a statement.

Regional news agency SVT Vastmanland posted photos from the police line outside the Erikslund shopping center.

(Translation: "RIGHT NOW: Confirmed: Two dead in stabbing at Ikea in Erikslund (shopping center) in Vasteras.")

On Twitter, local residents expressed horror. Amanda Agestav wrote: "Shudder at what's happening in 'my' city right now. Two are said to be dead after a knife attack at Ikea. All thoughts are with those affected."


Sweden maintains a low homicide rate, with an average over several decades of about 90 killings annually in the country of 9.5 million people.
