Security officials said pirates have hijacked a fuel tanker off the coast of Nigeria, abducting an unknown number of foreign sailors.
Officials said the Nigerian-flagged MT Matrix was boarded by unknown gunmen Saturday off the coast of Bayelsa state. The officials said Nigerian and Pakistani sailors were abducted in the attack.
Piracy is increasing in West Africa's Gulf of Guinea, with gunmen frequently targeting oil ships to steal crude and seize foreign hostages for ransom payments.
The International Maritime Bureau has recorded at least 19 piracy incidents off Nigeria this year.
