Officials in Indian Kashmir say security forces have fired tear gas and pellet guns at hundreds of rock-throwing protesters who took to the streets after prayers for Eid-al-Fitr, the Muslim holiday marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
The security forces clashed with the demonstrators Friday in several locations in Srinagar, the region's main city, injuring more than 19 people.
Protesters shouted "We want freedom" and anti-Indian slogans.
Authorities had placed separatist leaders under house arrest on the eve of the Eid festivities.
Officials say protests spread to other cities in the region.
Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan. They have fought two wars over its control since they won independence from Britain in 1947.
