Soldier Killed in Sri Lanka Arms Depot Blast

Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka

A fire at a Sri Lankan army ammunition depot has killed one soldier and forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes.

Officials say people living within five kilometers of the depot were forced to leave their residences Sunday.

The blaze set off explosions at the Salawa military complex, about 33 kilometers east of the capital, Colombo.

Authorities say the fire started at one arms depot and spread to a larger ammunitions depot.

Some residents were allowed to return to their home Monday.

Officials ordered all nearby schools and government offices to remain closed Monday.
