A senior female police officer in southern Afghanistan has died from a gunshot wound, months after her female predecessor was also shot dead.

A Helmand province government spokesman said Negar, who like many Afghans uses only one name, died early Monday following a shooting Sunday in the provincial capital, Lashkar Gah. The gunmen were on a motorbike and escaped from the scene.

The 38-year-old Negar had been working as a senior investigator since replacing the late Islam Bibi, who was killed in July.

Bibi was widely seen as an example of how opportunities for women have improved in Afghanistan since the repressive Taliban regime was ousted in 2001.

However, Bibi, who was 37 years old and the mother of three, received regular death threats from people who did not approve of her career, including her brother who tried to kill her three times.
