What Is in the Democratic Party Platform?

Here's a look at some goals of the Democratic Party platform adopted at the convention in Philadelphia.

The economy:

Raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour

Make college education more affordable

Secure equal pay for women

Fight every effort to cut, privatize or weaken Social Security

Make it easier to start and grow a small business

Support a financial transactions tax on Wall Street to curb excessive speculation and high-frequency trading

Cut back tax breaks for firms that ship jobs overseas; eliminate tax breaks for big oil and gas companies

Establish a multimillionaire surtax to ensure that millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share

The nation:

End institutional and systemic racism, including removing the Confederate battle flag from public properties

Reform mandatory minimum sentences and close private prisons and detention centers

Move toward legalizing marijuana

Abolish the death penalty

Support comprehensive immigration reform

Support comprehensive federal nondiscrimination protections for all LGBT Americans

The environment:

Commit to meeting 50 percent of U.S. electricity needs from clean energy sources within a decade

Protect public lands and waterways

Oppose drilling in the Arctic and off the Atlantic coast

The world:

Confront the Islamic State group by leading a coalition effort against the militants, uniting the Syrian opposition and working toward a political transition in Syria

Reach a negotiated political transition that ends Bashar al-Assad’s rule in Syria

Oppose Republican Donald Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims from entering the country

Close the U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba

Reduce the number of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons around the world, as well as their means of delivery

Build strong alliances to deter Russian aggression, build European resilience and protect NATO allies

Compel North Korea to abandon its illegal nuclear and missile programs

Continue the Obama administration's work to ensure that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon
