Sudan's Bashir to Attend Chad President's Inauguration

Reports from Sudan say President Omar al-Bashir will visit Chad Sunday to attend the inauguration of his Chadian counterpart, Idriss Deby, for a new five-year term in office.

This will be Mr. Bashir's second visit to Chad in as many months, defying International Criminal Court warrants seeking his arrest on charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in Darfur. Chad is a member of the ICC, but has so far refused to detain Mr. Bashir.

Sudan Media says President Bashir will lead a high-level delegation to the Chadian capital Ndjamena, to participate in Mr. Deby's swearing-in ceremony.

Mr. Deby won a fourth term in office in the April 25 presidential election after receiving 89 percent of the vote.

President Deby has ruled Chad since seizing power in a 1990 coup. Under his rule, the nation has become an oil producer, but remains one of the poorest in the world.
