Thousands of students in Algeria have marched toward the presidential palace in the capital, Algiers, where they were confronted by security forces.

News reports say some demonstrators called for the resignation of Education Minister Rashid Hawarbia while others chanted anti-government slogans.

Witnesses say several protesters were injured in clashes with security forces.

Within the past two months, Algerian police have used force to disrupt several opposition protests in the country.

The rallies appear to be inspired by the wave of uprisings against autocratic governments in other Arab nations.
