A roadside bomb has killed three tribal elders in western Afghanistan.

Officials say the group was attacked in Farah province Sunday. The Associated Press reports the group was driving to a meeting with villagers to discuss what projects the Afghan government and international donors should fund in the region.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai and NATO spokesman Rear Admiral Vic Beck condemned the attack.

Beck called the bombing a "cowardly" insurgent attempt to prevent progress in Afghanistan.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. Taliban and other insurgent groups frequently target Afghans who work with the government.

In northern Afghanistan Sunday, NATO says an insurgent attack killed a service member.

The violence comes a day after a suicide bomber attacked an Afghan army bus in the country's capital, wounding seven soldiers and three civilians.

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
