Dutch police have arrested a man for allegedly abusing 30 to 50 children in the capital, Amsterdam, and for the distribution of child pornography.

Prosecutors in the Netherlands said in a press conference late Sunday that the 27-year-old man worked as a substitute teacher at two nursery schools since 2007 and also offered babysitting services on the Internet.

Amsterdam's mayor, Eberhard van der Laan, says the man is suspected of "grave abuse" of dozens of children under the age of four.

Chief prosecutor Herman Bolhaar says the investigation was launched after U.S. authorities found child pornography believed to have originated in the Netherlands.

Bolhaar says the suspect was detained on December 7 after Dutch television aired a picture of an unidentified victim of child pornography.

Prosecutors say the man, originally from Latvia, has since confessed to dozens of cases of child abuse.

The man's male partner was also arrested on suspicion of possessing child pornography. The 37-year-old is not suspected of child molestation.

Parents of the victims were informed in a meeting Sunday.
