Egypt Detains Israeli Man Suspected of Spying

Egypt has detained an Israeli man suspected of spying in Cairo and trying to provoke violence during the uprising that overthrew former Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak.

Officials said Sunday the Israeli entered Cairo around January 25 and posed as a foreign correspondent. The officials claim he is an officer with Israel's Mossad intelligence agency.

The Egyptian sources also claim the man had encouraged youths to clash with the Egyptian military during protests in Cairo's Tahrir Square.

Israel's Foreign Ministry said it was not aware of the detention.

Egypt signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1979.
