U.S. prosecutors say they will not bring doping charges against seven-time Tour de France cycling champion Lance Armstrong.

Prosecutors announced Friday they are closing the case after a two-year investigation into allegations Armstrong and his teammates used performance enhancing drugs. They gave no reason for the decision.

Armstrong issued a statement late Friday saying he was "gratified" and thankful of the U.S. Attorney's Office for reaching its decision.

The American cycling star says he looks forward to continuing his professional and personal life - including activist work in the fight against cancer - without distractions.

Armstrong denies using performance enhancing drugs during his reign as Tour de France winner from 1999-2005.

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
