Hearings that could lead to the impeachment of embattled Philippines President Gloria Arroyo got off to a rocky start Wednesday in the Philippine legislature.
The justice committee in the lower House of Representatives opened a hearing into three impeachment complaints - then immediately postponed them until next week because of disagreements on procedural issues.
Also Wednesday lawmakers in the Philippine Senate heard testimony from an army officer that local election officials were bribed to help Ms. Arroyo win the May 2004 presidential election.
The president has been under fire after admitting she called an election official during the vote counting. She has denied trying to rig the outcome of the election, and has resisted calls for her resignation.
