Croatia, Germany Win Opening Matches at Euro 2008

Croatia and three-time European football champion Germany have won their opening Group B matches at the Euro 2008 tournament being played in Austria and Switzerland.

Lukas Podolski scored a goal in each half Sunday to lead Germany to a 2-0 win over Poland in Klagenfurt, Austria. The 23-year-old Podolski, who was born in Poland, opened the scoring in the 20th minute. He sealed the win by blasting a rebound into the net in the 72nd minute.

Earlier, Croatia shut out co-host Austria 1-0 at Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna. The winning goal came early, as Luka Modric converted a penalty kick in the fourth minute.

The tournament continues Monday in Switzerland as World Cup champion Italy plays the Netherlands in Bern and France takes on Romania in Zurich.
