Australian cyclist Simon Gerrans has captured the 15th stage of the Tour de France and Frank Schleck of Luxembourg has seized the overall race leader's yellow jersey.
Gerrans won the first Tour stage of his career Sunday as he led a four-man breakaway group on a grueling climb to the top of Prato Nevoso in Italy. He completed the 183-kilometer stage, from Embrun, France to Prato Nevoso, in 4:50:44, three seconds ahead of Egoi Martinez of Spain. Danny Pate of the United States was third, 10 seconds back.
Schleck was in a group more than four minutes behind the breakaway riders, but on the final climb he got past Cadel Evans of Australia, whose overall lead, after the 14th stage had been one second.
Bernhard Kohl of Austria now is in second place after 15 stages, seven seconds back, while Evans is third, eight seconds behind Frank Schleck.
Less than 50 seconds now separates the top six riders from the yellow jersey.
