Thousands of Homes Evacuated in California Wildfire

The governor of California says authorities have evacuated 6,600 homes to protect residents from a wildfire that is blazing across the western U.S. state.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger told reporters Sunday the fire has destroyed three homes and burned 14,000 hectares of land.

At least three people have been reported hurt.

Several fires are burning across California, but the wildfire that started last Wednesday in the mountains north of Los Angeles has been the most difficult to contain.

Firefighters have been attacking the flames from both the air and the ground, but hot, dry weather has slowed their efforts. Officials say it could take a week to contain the flames.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
