California Wildfires Spread, Kill 2 Firefighters

Officials say two firefighters battling a wildfire in the western U.S. state of California have died in a vehicle crash.

Authorities say the two men were killed as their truck rolled down a mountainside near Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, firefighters say the wildfire in the Los Angeles area has threatened at least 12,000 homes and other structures.

Officials say hot, dry weather has helped the flames spread across 14,000 hectares of land. Monday's forecast in southern California calls for continued dryness, with a high temperature around 32 degrees Celsius. Cooling is expected later in the week.

At least three other people have been reported hurt, and authorities say two of them were badly burned when they tried to ride out the firestorm by sitting in a backyard hot tub.

Media reports say the flames are also threatening Mount Wilson, the site of a historic observatory and several radio and television transmitters.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
