Toronto goalie Ed Belfour posted the 447th victory of his National Hockey League career to tie for second place on the all-time win list, as his Maple Leafs topped the Florida Panthers 2-1.
Belfour made 34 saves in Monday's game in Florida to lead the Maple Leafs. He is tied with Hall of Fame great Terry Sawchuck among NHL netminders. Patrick Roy, who retired from Colorado in 2003, tops the all-time list with 551 victories.
In the leagues' only other game Monday, Detroit rookie goalie Jimmy Howard also enjoyed a victory, stopping the puck 22 times in his NHL debut to help the visiting Red Wings beat the Los Angeles Kings 5-2. Detroit captain Steve Yzerman had a power play goal and an assist as his Wings beat the Kings for a 10th straight time. Detroit has won three of its last four games.
