In National Hockey League action Friday, the Dallas Stars edged the visiting Carolina Hurricanes 5-4 in a shootout. Mike Modano scored the winner after finding the net twice in regulation time.
The Stars have now won 11 of their last 13 games.
In another contest decided after overtime, the Tampa Bay Lightning got by the visiting Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 on a shootout goal by Brad Richards. Tampa has won eight of its last 10 games.
The Ottawa Senators improved on the best record in the NHL with a 5-1 trouncing of the visiting Los Angeles Kings. Dany Heatly scored twice for the Senators, who have now won 20 games against just four losses.
In the only other game Friday, the San Jose Sharks snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 5-0 drubbing of the Sabres in Buffalo. Jonathan Cheechoo scored twice to help the Sharks snap the Sabres five-game winning streak.
