German Family Kidnapped in Yemen

update

German officials say Yemeni tribesmen have kidnapped a German family including a former diplomat.

Officials say Juergen Chrobog, his wife and three children, became separated from other tourists while traveling in Yemen's eastern region of Shabwa.

Mr. Chrobog is a former deputy foreign minister and former German ambassador to the United States.

Authorities in Yemen suspect tribesmen abducted the tourists to pressure the government to release detained members of their tribe.

Two Austrians and two Swiss tourists were kidnapped in Yemen over the past month, but were later released.

Yemeni tribes have been known to use kidnappings to try to force concessions from the government. Usually the hostages are released unharmed.
