Nigeria generates an estimated 32 million metric tons of solid waste per year, one of the highest in Africa. Of that figure, 2.5 million metric tons are plastic waste. To fix the problem, the government in 2009 awarded contracts for the procurement and installation of recyclers across the country but not much is heard about the project since. But as Timothy Obiezu reports from Abuja, a local community of recyclers are making an impact exchanging trash for cash.
