Romania's presidential election is going to a runoff after no candidate earned a majority in Sunday's first round of balloting.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta led with about 40 percent of the vote, while his main challenger, Klaus Iohannis, got 30 percent.

The prime minister and the mayor of the city of Sibiu will face each other in the runoff, to be held November 16.

The winner will replace President Traian Basescu, who is stepping down after 10 years in office.
