Russia’s Move to Soften Domestic Violence Law Raises Fears

Russian lawmakers recently voted to partially decriminalize domestic violence in cases when there is no bodily harm. Supporters argue a fine or limited jail time is enough punishment and avoids breaking up families. Opponents, including victims of domestic violence, say police in Russia are already reluctant to get involved in cases of domestic abuse and the step-back will only exacerbate the problem.
