LAST MONTH THE PRESIDENT SALVA KIIR APPOINTED A NEW CHIEF JUSTICE FOR THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH SUDAN. THE PERSON CHOSEN FOR THE IMPORTANT ROLE OF SHAPING THE FOUNDATIONS OF AN INDEPENDENT AND EFFECTIVE JUDICIARY IN SOUTH SUDAN IS CHAN REEC MADUT, FORMERLY THE DEPUTY CHAIRMAN OF THE SOUTHERN SUDAN REFERENDUM COMMISSION. A MONTH INTO HIS NEW JOB AS CHIEF JUSTICE, MADUT HAS PLEDGED TO REFORM THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM INTO A BRANCH OF GOVERNMENT THAT SOUTH SUDANESE CAN BE PROUD OF. HE SPOKE TO VOA’S MARVIS BIRUNGI ON HOW HE INTENDS TO ENSURE THESE REFORMS.
