This week marks the 70th anniversary of the day (August 15) Japan surrendered to U.S. led allied forces ending World War II, the deadliest military conflict in history. While there were many devastating battles and turning points in the Pacific campaign, the Battle of Okinawa is remembered as the bloodiest and costliest of the war, and was cited at the time to justify the subsequent use of atomic weapons on Japanese cities.  VOA’s Brian Padden reports.
