UN Prosecutor Will Not Appeal Provisional Release of Former Kosovo PM

Chief United Nations war crimes prosecutor Carla del Ponte has decided not to appeal a Hague tribunal decision authorizing the provisional release of Kosovo's former prime minister pending trial.

A tribunal spokeswoman, Florence Hartmann, announced the decision Tuesday, but did not specify a time for his release. The tribunal had authorized the release of Mr. Haradinaj Monday, but immediately suspended the measure to give prosecutors 24 hours to appeal.

Mr. Haradinaj resigned his post and surrendered to The Hague tribunal in March after the court indicted him on 37 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity. These include the murder, torture and rape of Serbs and other civilians during the ethnic conflict of the late 1990s.

Mr. Haradinaj denies the charges, saying his actions were consistent with international law.
