update

The U.S. men's Under-20 soccer team has defeated Egypt, 1-0, while Argentina downed Germany, 1-0, at the World Youth Football championships in the Netherlands.

D.C. United club star Freddy Adu assisted on the only goal of the U.S. game with Egypt. Moments after coming on in the 55th minute, the 16-year-old Adu fired a shot at the Egyptian goal.

The shot was deflected, but Jacob Peterson of the United States headed the deflection into the net. The U.S. men won Group-D with seven points from three matches.

Four-time champions Argentina finished second after their 1-0 win over Germany. Neri Cardozo scored for the Argentines two minutes before halftime.

Meanwhile in Group-E play, Colombia and Syria advanced to the second round Saturday. Colombia beat Syria 2-0 and won the group with nine points. Syria was next with four points followed by Italy, which defeated Canada, 4-1.

The top two teams in each of the six groups and the four best third-place finishers qualify for the second round. The third-place teams will not be known until play ends Saturday.
