NHL Hockey - Dallas Crushes Chicago

In National Hockey League action Friday, Dallas crushed the visiting Chicago Blackhawks 9-1 as the Stars matched the most goals they have scored since moving to Texas.

Stu Barnes capped a hat trick (three goals) with a short-handed goal, and Dallas teammate Jason Arnott scored twice. The Stars had not scored nine goals in a game since early 1995.

Here in Washington, rookie Alex Ovechkin scored the only shootout goal after a scoreless overtime to lift the Capitals to a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers.

In California, Marcel Goc scored the only goal of the game on a power play 51 seconds into overtime to give the San Jose Sharks the (1-0) win over the host Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

The other NHL games Friday saw the Edmonton Oilers win their fifth straight game, beating St. Louis 7-2, handing the Blues their seventh straight loss. The Montreal Canadiens edged the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 as Niklas Sundstrom scored with just under three minutes remaining. And the Vancouver Canucks beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-3.
