What Is Title 42?
The Biden administration recently announced it plans to end a Trump-era policy known as Title 42, which allowed the US to quickly expel migrants to their country of origin or Mexican border towns and denied them a chance at asylum. While some Democrats support ending the policy and celebrated the announcement, Republicans are against the decision. But on April 29, after Republican-led states sued to keep Title 42 authority at the southern border, on grounds of preventing the spread of COVID-19, a federal judge ordered a two-week halt in the phasing out of the policy. A hearing has been scheduled on May 13 for arguments on whether to prevent Title 42 from ending on May 23. The state of Texas also filed a separate but similar lawsuit in federal court. But what is Title 42?
