Bolivian President-Elect Visits Cuba

Cuban President Fidel Castro warmly greeted Bolivian President-elect Evo Morales Friday on a visit to Havana.

Upon arrival, Mr. Morales said his trip to the island was "a gesture of friendship to the Cuban people."

Mr. Morales has previously pledged his support for Mr. Castro's struggles against what he called imperialism.

Cuba is the first stop of Mr. Morales' international pre-inaugural trip that will also take him to Europe, Asia and South Africa. Mr. Morales' inauguration is set for January 22.

The president-elect is expected to return to Bolivia for New Year's Eve before embarking for Spain, France, Belgium, China and South Africa. He is expected to be back in South America by January 13 for a meeting in Brazil with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
