Inside today’s edition we start off with two awesome tunes about Coronavirus: one shows off quarantine dance moves (Diamond Platnumz, Tanzania) and the other rallies for a collective effort to achieve Zero Corona (Mr. Leo, Cameroon). Then we dive right into a tribute to fallen Nigerian reggae star Majek Fashek who died in New York City at age 57. Then there’s more great music by Oliver Mtukudzi (Zimbabwe), Stevo Antimbilla (Ghana), and Titi Façon (Senegal); Song of the Week “Soweto Blues” by Juls (Nigeria/South Africa); and then a second tribute to John Amutabi Nzenze who passed away on May 30th. Mr. Nzenze was the last living pioneer and player of African Twist – a music dance genre that was wildly popular in the 1960s throughout East Africa. His last international performance took place in Washington DC in 2014 and at that time he came into the VOA studio and performed for Music Time in Africa. We listen to some of that live session at the back half of today’s show to remember John Nzenze and honor his life and legacy.
