72 Dead in Indian Building Collapse

Rescue workers use a stretcher to carry the body of a victim across the rubble after the collapse of a residential building in Thane district, on the outskirts of Mumbai, Apr. 6, 2013.

The search has ended for victims of a building collapse in Mumbai, India, where officials say at least 72 people died, including a number of children.

Authorities said Saturday that after an overnight search, there was no chance any more survivors would be found in the ruins. Officials said 36 people are still hospitalized with injuries.

The eight-story, illegally-built building on the outskirts of India's commercial capital collapsed on Thursday.

Most of the dead and injured were construction workers and their families staying in unfinished parts of the building.

Local residents and officials say the building was quickly constructed on protected forest land.

Local police commissioner K.P. Raghuvanshi confirmed the structure was built illegally.

Investigators are looking for the builders, who will be charged with culpable homicide.
