Japan's Kawashima Retains World Boxing Council Super Flyweight Title

Champion Katsushige Kawashima of Japan has successfully defended his World Boxing Council super flyweight title. He retained his crown on a split decision over Jose Navarro of the United States in Tokyo.

The judge from Mexico had Kawashima winning by one point (115-114) and the judge from Thailand had the Japanese fighter winning by two points (115-113). The Canadian judge scored Navarro winning convincingly by 11 points (120-109).

Kawashima sustained a cut over his left eye in the early rounds, but held on to gain the victory in the 12-round bout. It was his second successful defense of the super flyweight title.

The 30-year-old Japanese improves to 28 wins and three losses. The loss was the first for the American Jose Navarro.
