Moldovan Parliament Re-elects Pro-Western President

Moldova's parliament has re-elected Vladimir Voronin, a pro-Western leader of the Communist Party, to a second term as president.

Results from Monday's election show Mr. Voronin received 75 votes in the 101-seat chamber, far more than the 61 votes needed to take office.

Mr. Voronin was widely predicted to be re-elected, despite parliamentary elections in March in which the ruling Communist Party won only 56 seats in the legislature.

Mr. Voronin, who took office in 2001, has worked to boost ties with the European Union, amid rising tension with former ally, Russia.

The Moldovan leader and his party have found themselves increasingly at odds with Moscow, mostly over Moldova's breakaway Transdniestr region.
