Polls Close in Tanzanian National Elections

Vote counting is underway in Tanzania, following national elections that went smoothly except for scattered violence on the semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar.

Witnesses there say several people were injured when police clashed with opposition supporters in Zanzibar. Police fired into the air to disperse one group of protesters who tried to block what they called illegal voters from reaching the polls.

A spokesman for the opposition Civic United Front told VOA that overall Wednesday's elections went well.

Turnout appeared to be strong for the vote, which is expected to extend the ruling party's more than 40-year grip on the presidency and the legislature.

Foreign Minister Jakaya Kikwete is the favorite to win the presidency, replacing Benjamin Mkapa who is barred from seeking another term. Final results are expected by Friday.
