Israel Strikes Militant Targets in Lebanon

Israeli warplanes launched attacks against Syrian-backed Palestinian and Lebanese militants in Lebanon Sunday.

The attacks killed a member of Hezbollah and a fighter of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command. The Israeli warplanes hit sites near Beirut, in the Bekaa Valley and along the Lebanese border after militants in Lebanon fired rockets into Israel.

During some of the airstrikes, Israeli troops clashed with Hezbollah militants in a disputed border area.

Hours after the fighting started, U.N. peacekeepers based in Lebanon said they had secured a ceasefire after discussions with all sides.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert warned that his country would launch harsh responses to any attacks by militants based in Lebanon. Israeli authorities said they also planned to take the matter to the United Nations Security Council.
