Abashidze Resigns, Flees Ajaria - 2004-05-05

Georgia's government says the leader of the renegade Ajaria republic, Aslan Abashidze, has resigned and fled the country.

Mr. Abashidze boarded a plane at the Batumi airport late Wednesday night, accompanied by the head of the Russian national security council, Igor Ivanov, who had been mediating the crisis.

Mr. Abashidze had been defying central Georgian authority in the autonomous republic.
