Top-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain has easily advanced to the third round of the Canberra International tennis tournament in Australia.
The Spaniard overwhelmed Belarussian qualifier Tatiana Poutchek, 6-0, 6-1. Number-four Shahar Peer of Israel and sixth-seeded Colombian Catalina Castano also won their second round matches on Tuesday.
Peer trailed Eleni Danilidou of Greece 5-1 in the first set before coming back to win 7-6, 6-2. Castano battled through two close sets to beat Italy's Tathiana Garbin, 7-6, 7-5.
Fifth-seeded Roberta Vinci of Italy and number nine Virginie Razzano of France lost their matches. Aiko Nakamura of Japan surprised Vinci, 7-5, 6-0, while Melinda Czink of Hungary rallied for a 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 win over Razzano.
In other results, Germany's Julia Schruff downed Yvonne Meusburger of Austria, 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, while Cho Yoon-jeong of South Korea beat Finnish qualifier Emma Laine, 6-4, 6-4.
